Front Cover Image

This is the image that I will be using as the front cover for my magazine.  I've done a landscape photo, so that I can create a fold out cover.

Front Cover photo shoot

Today I did a photo shoot for the front cover of my magazine.  I'm planning to merge these photos together to create an interesting and individual from cover.

Front cover designs

Please comment on which cover design you like, and any improvements that I could make.

This design will have a fold out cover, there will be a photo that is the same model, but on the image several times.  I'm keeping this one simple because I want the image to draw people in.

Textual analysis - Double page spread

This is a double page spread from Q magazine.
This page carries on the sophisticated and basic styling of the front cover and contents page.  The page is also very well laid out, there is clear definition between the writing and the text.
The pages are glossy, and feel expensive, this is also reflected in the colour quality of the photos.
All of the design and production elements relate to the quality of the cover and the rest of the magazine.

Textual analysis - Kerrang contents page

The Kerrang contents page is very full and busy.  The yellow and the black stand out from the rest of the writing telling you that it is a contents page, there is also yellow and black headers for the important sections of the magazine.
There is a grid of pictures, with the biggest photo being the biggest news, there are page numbers that stand out due to there yellow highlights.
There is a lot of information on this page, this gives the impression that the magazine is going to be full worth the money.  This also works the other way, as the busyness of the page could be overwhelming and people might not buy it.
Compared to Q magazine the contents page looks complex and full.

Textual analysis - Q magazine Contents Page

This contents page is very clean, crisp and basic, this gives a very sophisticated feel.
The red, black and white colour theme is carried across from the front cover, this keeps some consistency and theme through the magazine.  The contents page is well divided in columns, the columns are titled in bold white text on red background.  The red numbers are medium sized and stand out on the white page.
The large photo on the right hand side of the page helps promote one of the higher profile articles in the magazine, as well as make the contents page look more interesting.
In Q magazine, there is usually a second contents page, this is because of vast amount of content that is in the magazine.

Textual analysis - Kerrang

The front cover of this magazine is simple, but quite busy.  The masthead stands out, even though it is partially covered, because of the white text on a black background.  There is a strap line above the title, giving details on a competition, this is to entice people to buy the magazine.  There is a banner across the middle of the page, this give information about the main feature of the issue.  The photo  is the dominant feature of the front cover, Cory Taylor is the lead singer of a band, he has a commanding personality that really comes through in the photo.  The way that he is looking out towards the viewer draws peoples eyes to the magazine.
There are several other photos on the page, these accompany cover lines advertising other articles in the publication.
Kerrang! stands out on the news stand because of its logo,  the cracking glass effect stands out and is quite effective. In comparison to Q magazine, Kerrang is quite expensive for the quality of the paper and printing and the amount of content in the magazine.  It is also a weekly publication, this makes it more expensive per month that some other magazines.

Textual Analysis - Q magazine

The front cover of this magazine is really simple.  It is the simplicity that makes this a very successful design.
The mast head, a bold red and white Q, in the top left corner tells you what the magazine is, and it is instantly recognisable on the shelf of a newsagent, this is because it has become a brand identity.  Q gets its name from music being cued up ready to play, the name was changed from "Cue" to "Q" to avoid confusion with a snooker magazine.
The bold silver writing in the top right applies to the issue as a whole, "All New Look Issue" is explaining that there has been significant change to the magazines design.  This also makes the magazine look expensive and classy.
The cover of the magazine is very simple, the main feature being the photograph.  Angus Young is the lead guitarist for an iconic rock band, he is wearing his iconic "school uniform" and is in a classic pose.  The photo is obscuring the headline of the main article in the magazine, this headline is in a bold clear font, it also relates to the picture that is obscuring it.
The glossy, high quality paper that the magazine is printed on reflects the price, £3.90, but you do get quite a lot for your money when you compare it to other publications.

This is anoth front cover of Q magazine.  It is a flod out cover that is crammed with artwork from a Gorillaz album.  This cover is very well layed out because it is complex, but not busy.  As with the previous cover, the mast head is in the top left corner telling you what the magazine is, this one has also been incorperated with the graphics on the front.  There are cover lines along the bottom of the page, they help direct the viewer across the page when the cover is folded up.
The graphic on the front has been provided by the band, because they use cartoon charactors instead of photos.  The strap line across the top of the page advertises Q magazines status in the media world.  The bubble below the mast head advertises one of the main articles, to correspond with the graphics.  As with the previous cover, it is high quality paper and high quality printing.
